The name Wichita High School Southeast was given by the Board of Education before the school was opened in 1957. Most of the other traditions were started by a Student Advisory Committee which was composed of students from other high schools (East and Planeview) and junior high schools (Robinson and Curtis), as well as Southeast staff members. The Student Advisory Committee discussed problems related to school life such as pep assemblies, student government, colors, symbols, fight song, and alma mater.
In resolving school colors, the committee looked for colors that would show up well at night and clean well. They decided that gold and white would work well in all aspects of school life.
In searching for a symbol, the committee looked for something that would be characteristic of this part of the country as well as fit in with the various uniforms. Some of the suggested names were: Golden Bisons, Golden Buffaloes, Rangers, Wranglers, Prairie Hawks, and the Golden Raiders. The group, of course, selected Golden Buffaloes.
